Introduction To Harmonica

Hello Friends!!

Perhaps you have listen the melodious sound of an instruement played in some old movies like Solva Saal(1958)(Song was Hai Apna Dil To Awara...) , Tumsa Nahi Dekha(1957)(Song was Yu To Hamne Laakh Hasin Dekhe He.....), Aradhana(1969)(Song was Mere Sapano Ki Raani....) or in Bollywood Blockbuster Sholay(1975). Hmmm..... and you guessed correct!! It is the mouthorgan which sounds so much melodious!! I was very much impressed by this instruement(hope you too that is why you are here) and start learning it and now I thought to help the people like you who are keen to learn this intoxicating instruement by this blog. So this blog is totally made for those who really love to listen Harmonica(In European countries it is famous as harmonica) and really want to learn how to play it.

I was very shocked when I tried to search the sites for Harmonica Learning and I found very few. So i decided to make one. Actually Mouthorgan was very famous instruement in the era of 60's-70's and also it was one of the favoutite instrument of "Panchamdaa"(R.D.Burman) who played it in sholey. In that time young boys were very keen to learn harmonica and in colleges they use to play it in the lobby to impress the girs lol!!!:).

There are basically two types of harmonica availabale. One is Diatonic(Single Scale) and the other is Chromatic(Scale Changer). The diatonic harmonica is made to play songs in only single key where as chromatic one is designed to play songs in different scale. In chromatic harmonica we can change the scal by a key given on harmonica in left or right side(depends upon how you hold it lolz!!:)). But It is better to start with diatonic one!! I am having 24 whole diatonic harmonica so I will guide as per it.

First of all I will start with how to play sa ra ga ma... on a harmonica. In 24 holes harmonica there are basiclly 3 octaves, 1st one is the Lower Octave from which the lower notes are generated, 2nd one is the Middile Octave from which Middium notes are generated and 3rd one is the Higher Octave from which the high notes are generated. A newbie is always confused where to draw and where to blow in harmonica so I have given below the same:

Sa-Blow

Re-Draw

Ga-Blow

Ma-Draw

Pa-Blow

Dha-Draw

Ni-Draw

Try to practice the Sa re ga ma.... in all three octaves in both order(straight as well as reverse) and get good command on it. Very soon I will come back with my second post in which I will give some notations of songs so that you can play it on your own till that practising whatever I describe above!! Good Luck!!
